Arjen Kroon
Hopmansweg 10 1724 PL, Oudkarspel
Why does Arjen have an organic farm? “The transition to an organic company actually has its origins in the years after the land consolidation in 1970 – 1975. Due to a declining interest in horticulture, islands were left fallow. I plowed some of these fallow islands and started growing cabbage on them. The cultivation on these plots was significantly less affected by diseases than the islands that had not been fallow. That brought the insight into how important crop rotation is. Moreover, I sometimes forgot to spray those fields and when I went to check, the weeds were not that bad. Because the cabbage had grown large and wide, the weeds simply had no room. It was actually a very logical step.” Kees supplies cabbage for Nimble.
Krispijn van den Dries
Zwijnsweg 5 8307 PP Ens
BioRomeo is a family business, started in the 1940s. At the time of reclamation, Krispijn’s grandparents single-handedly converted the seabed into the current polder landscape, thus acquiring a piece land to start a farm. Since then, the company has undergone many transformations. From a regular farm with an eye for nature, it was converted to an organic company in 1990 by Digni, Krispijn’s father. This is how the collaboration between Peter Keij and Digni van den Dries came about. In 2006, a step further was taken in terms of nature-oriented approach, from then on the company is biodynamic and all products fall under the Demeter license. In 2012, the company took on its current form and was renamed BioRomeo. Nowadays Krispijn and Peter run the company together. Krispijn supplies carrots for Nimble.
Joep van de Bool
Dijk 2, Neer, 6086AM
For over 35 years, de WAOG in Neer has been growing a wide range of vegetables in an ecological manner. The 11 hectares of land was purchased in 1981, after which the organic cultivation of vegetables and arable products started. Organic farming was still new then and everything they learnt they has to self develop. Due to the favourable climatic location, growing early vegetables has always been a speciality of ‘de Waog’ De Waog is run by Wiel and Joep van de Bool and Trudelies Dorssers. They have their own farm shop and now the cultivation area has now been reduced to approximately 5 hectares. In addition to vegetables, potatoes and grains are grown, and part of it is sown annually with green manure (clover). Because of this, the soil is not cultivated too intensively, and – due to a wide crop rotation – the disease pressure for the crops is minimal. Fertilization is done with organic straw-rich manure that is ripened for a year on the compost site. De Waog supplies sweet potatoes to Nimble.
Kees Nieuweboer
Hoarnestreek 2 8856 RV, Pietersbierum
Nieuweboer is an organic horticultural company on the Zeedijk in the Hoarne region in Pietersbierum. The company is run by Kees Nieuweboer and his wife Loes. The head-neck-rump farm dates from 1840. Kees and Loes have 42.5 hectares of leafy crops, wheat, & harvested crops. They have been growing organic products for 15 years, which means, among other things, that no toxic substances have been sprayed on the crop.
Frank de Koning
Kloosterweg 5 3232 LC, Brielle
Frank de Koning has a modern biodynamic greenhouse horticulture company with four locations in Brielle and Tinte. Peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and aubergines are grown in rotation in Frank’s greenhouses. One of the requirements for certification is that the plants are in the soil and not on substrate. It makes sense, says Frank: ‘Growing good-quality organic products is only possible in an environment where soil fertility is in order, which allows strong plants to develop that have natural resilience. A strong plant is less susceptible to fungi and diseases, which means that intervention by the grower is much less necessary. So everything starts with the basics: the soil.” Frank supplies aubergines and bell peppers for Nimble.
Jan Bruisma
Latsmaleane 3, 8855 XK Sexbierum
Bruisma Bio became organic in 1999 when Jan Bruisma saw the neighbours at that time also cultivated organically and that this could be a good cultivation option. There was no turning back. Since they’re stopped using chemicals on their fields, they’ve seen an increase on insect biodiversity. They also grow cover crops and us organic manure to fertilize their fields. They currently cultivate 90 hectares with crops as potatoes, celeriac, broccoli, and shallots. They want to produce from nature and let research be directed towards that. Up until now that has been very limited. They want to be able to prove about capturing C02 in the soil which contributes to a much better soil life, reduce the greenhouse effect, and enable the soils even more to produce healthy food again in which a range of minerals is again abundantly present. Jan supplies broccoli for Nimble
Wiard Visser
Rijsdijk 98 in Rhoon
Meet Wiard Visser, a fourth-generation farmer from Zuid Holland, who believes in the symphony of nature. He has been instrumental in transitioning his farm to organic practices. De Buytenhof uses no chemicals on the diverse vegetable crops grown on the farm; they maintain sustainable practices such as crop rotation and using alternative fertilisers such as manure and bokashi on their fields. Wiard grows carrots, beets, onions, potatoes, cabbages, pumpkins, leeks and cauliflowers.
